Abstract | This article examines critically three shifting emphases in current pedagogical theory: from education to teaching; from open to closed schooling; and from pedagogies directed at subjects to objects. Against these trends the article goes on to consider Schulzes conception of an "experience and adventure" oriented society in which the primary motivation is to have as many intense experiences as possible. I note that one of the most significant aspects of this emerging social orientation is the emerging of an entirely new framework of social stratums. Using recent publications in the field of pedagogy, the article goes on to explore the implications of some of these trends for educational theory. It specifically argues that educators must do something to confront the consequences of "experience and adventure oriented society" by pioneering new efforts to educate the children' s capacity-to-experience otherwise the market will do so in its own uncontrollable way. The paper concludes with some proposals for the realization of a pedagogy of experience- capability in schools. (DIPF/orig.) |
