AbstractThe article investigates "how academic managers as a group view management practices within their own institutions". A national survey of Australian institutional managers is reported. It "investigated such issues as decision making structures, characteristics of management practices, external influences on governance and management, staff supervision, research and teaching management, and higher education policy at the national level. ... The [second] section provides background information regarding the Australian higher education sector and its governance and management structures. Section 3 outlines some of the major government policy changes regarding the sector. In this regard the faith by governments in market principles for higher education and the expectation that universities move to more corporate models of management are discussed. ... Selective results of the national survey of university managers are presented in Section 4. Particular attention is directed to examining the consequences of changes in management practices on the relationships between the senior executive and the deans and heads of departments. The final section considers some of the possible long term trends of the shift to a more managerialistic approach to the steering of the Australian higher education sector. (DIPF/orig.)
