Abstract | The author presents different factors which have caused significant changes in the status of education in the Russian society and in the personal life of the individual towards the end of the 20th century. "These changes are due to the development of the socio-economic situation, of communications and information technology, and of the science of education." Reviewing the concept of education as a service for individuals the author demonstrates that adult learning requires its own specific principles and technology. After having discussed questions of the theory of andragogy he formulates some principles of adult learning. Finally there are delineated problems concerning the further development of andragogy.
