| Abstract | REFLECT (Regenerated Freirean Literacy Through Empowering Community Techniques) is an approach to literacy and learning that has been developed by Action Aid. It has been trialled by Action Aid in Uganda, Bangladesh and El Salvador, and is emerging as a powerful new literacy approach which has been endorsed by Freire himself. One of its attractions as a method is its potential applicability to any social context. We report here on an independent trial of REFLECT we conducted as part of a larger project ... during which we worked with several groups of nomads in Western India. We focus in this paper on the interplay between an apparently neutral literacy method, and its impact in the social context of one group of pastoralists, the semi-sedentary Katchi Rabaris of Gujarat. ... Through this account of the experience of REFLECT, we draw out some of the methodological weaknesses we discovered, and offer suggestions to assist in refining this evolving methodology.
