Abstract | The article examines the relationship between gender and ethnicity in a working class high school, particularly as this relationship affects the attitudes of different groups of girls and boys to mathematics (confidence in maths, perceptions of the usefulness of maths and the sex-role congruency of maths). It is argued that gender and ethnicity combine in this working-class context to produce especially poor outcomes for girls of Greek background, with this group the most disadvantaged on a number of indicators. It further argues that these outcomes ars the result of school-specific and culture- specific factors, which combine to impact most heavily on this vulnerable group. (DIPF/orig.) |
