Abstract | This paper describes and analyses Swedish curriculum theory and research in a 20-year perspective in relation to the changes in the comprehensive school system and the decline of the welfare state. It is argued that the break-up of the strong "triangle" between the educational research community, the former National Board of Education and the Ministry of Education, which was essential in the implementation of the comprehensive school in the 1960s and in the promotion of research and theory on the curriculum, began in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Some of the consequences of this change ara analysed to highlight a changed agenda for curriculum theory and research in terms of a recontextualization not only of the curriculum objects but of curriculum theory and research itself.
