| Abstract | The author uses a framework of three questions which have to be responded if one wants to decide whether technology can solve the "big problems" of higher education: 1) Can Web make learning more accessible? The following examples for a positive answer to this question are discussed: Open Universities and distance learning, home schooling, alternative schooling and extension courses. 2) Can the Web promote improved learning? In this connection three positive issues are analysed: a) The Web "is very compatible with the way students now prefer to learn", b) it provides for flexible learning and c) it enables new kinds of learning, i.e. it promotes critical thinking, written communication skills and collaboration skills. 3) Can the Web help contain costs of education? In this section the author studies the "main areas of cost for a Web-based course: hardware and software, course development, and ongoing course support." (DIPF/Bi.) |
