| Abstract | The formation of markets has been a feature of education in industrialised countries, particularly in the English-speaking world.... The objectives of this book are to provide a synthesis of the trends to markets ('marketisation') in education, to explain why these trends are occurring and how they are manifest, and to reflect on their meanings and consequences. The book is at the one time a history of market development and an analysis of the present dynamics of markets in each sector: schooling, training and TAFE [technical and further education], higher education and research.... [Chapter 2 provides] a political economy of market production in education.... The main discussion is about education as investment in positional goods.... Part 2 comprises three parallel narratives ...: Chapter 3 describes the power-knowledge role of market liberalism since 1975, in the context of economic change and globalisation, and the programmes and methods of government. Chapter 4 traces the evolution of economic knowledge about education and its role in the government of education. Chapter 5 explores the dynamics of social advantage and positional competition in Australian education and the intersection between social competition and educational government....
