Abstract	The purpose of the publication is to give a basic information and knowledge about EU common principles and trends in education as well as a view on the educational development in particular EU member states considering a broader sociopolitical and cultural context. The introduction chapter expaunds priorities and progressive trends in the education development supporting integrative processes in Europe and the EU policies. The following chapters deal with 15 EU- member states in particular.... All the chapters are arranged with an identical structure and a consistent form facilitating orientation and utilising comparison. The first part of every chapter gives basic geopolitical data, information on the political system, economy and culture of the receptive country. The second part deals with the national and language composition of the population. Particular attention is given to minorities. The following four parts concern the education system, particularly aims and principles of education, language teaching, management and financing of education. A part devoted to the structure of educational system characterises its particular sectors from preschool to higher education. Special education for handicapped, adult education and teachers education are also focused. Activities supporting the realisation of the European or international dimension and mobility in education are rendered in the last part of every chapter. Finally a scheme of educational structure is included. (DIPD/orig.).
