Abstract	In order to build up a picture of the ideal "European" headteacher, it should be pointed out that the notion of responsibility has today been widely replaced by that of power. The director must above all be capable of motivating, and convincing rather than using authority. He must be able to create the conditions in which an effective relationship can be developed. He is a veritable human resources manager, capable of working with parents and of opening his establishment to the outside world. In addition he must also of course be capable of fostering the development of a truly European dimension in the school's teaching programmes. He must therefore be extremely attentive to the preoccupations of young people for whom the construction of Europe raises many questions. (DIPF/taken from the summary).
