Abstract | For a number of years, now, a Decree has been in force, in North- Rhine Westphalia, which states that all pupils in primary education (ages 6 to 10 years) should be taught about (i. e. not in or through) another European language. [...] In the Dutch policy statement "Grenzen Verleggen" (Extending Boundaries) issued by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences, a call is issued for further internationalisation in education. The ideas which lie behind this policy document closely match those prevalent on the other side of the border. The central focus is on an openness to and knowledge about other languages and cultures. [...] As a consequence of this policy document, the Municipality of Enschede, and the school authorities in the Borken district of Germany have jointly initiated an intercultural language observation and exercise project.
