Abstract	Far-reaching reforms took place in the Swedish school system in the 1960s when the former 'dual school system' came to an end. It was replaced by a comprehensive school for all children aged between 7 and 16 and an integrated upper secondary school (providing both academic and vocational education) for all young people at 16-19...To meet the increased demands of the labour market and a greater emphasis put on communication skills, the Swedish upper secondary school has now become less specialized and broader in construction. All young persons are assumed to need an upper secondary education of three years' duration, with more time given over to general subjects. The upper secondary school will constitute the base for transition both to working life and to further education. (DIPF/Orig.).
