Abstract | The transformation of the society after 1989 brought numerous changes in education which are based on the legislative framework amended from 1990 to 1995. The article describes the structure of secondary education and its development in the 1990s. It characterizes the current and future role of higher professional schools, and the motivation of secondary school graduates to enter higher education and the conditions for university admission. There are 27 universities under different authorities with about 107 faculties. The tables show the number of faculties by theirfields of studies and the number of students. Among the problems nearly all universities are confronted with are capacity limits of classrooms, equipment, libraries as well as financial, legal or other barriers. Otherwise diversification of higher education, the new type of post-secondary study offered after the school-leaving examination, and a growing number of students despite the significantly changing age structure are the basic trends.
