| Abstract | Religious education was introduced into the syllabus in 1990. Attitudes towards religious education depend on the social background of the parents. The more educated and affluent prefer religious education to be taught outside the school. However in private schools, where the parents are usually from the more privileged social group they still favor the teaching of religion in school. Teachers, particulary in the state sector, are the strongest opponents of religion in schools. This was confirmed by subsequent studies in 1990, 1992, and 1994, where opposition to religious education was seen to be growing. (DIPF/Abstract übernommen). |
