Abstract | The most vital question raised by this article is to what extent the social profile of non-public school pupils differs from the one of public schools. Basing on a number of detailed analyses, the author answers the question in the following way: non public schools display high overrepresentation of children whose parents run independent businesses or perform learned professions (jointly 60-70%), while children from workers' families relatively seldom happen to attend such schools. While investigating the causes of this state of affairs, the author attributes particular significance to the financial barrier, or rather people's overestimation of the actual fees charged by non- public schools. The author also indicates the importance of the mechanism based on the principle that children coming from the privileged class (financial, cultural and intellectual elites) find it easier to surmount the obstacles hindering the access to this class, mainly as a consequence of their parents' determination to ensure them the high level of education.
