| Abstract | (After two theoretical articles) four articles from authors originating in predominantly Muslim countries frankly analyze the gender-based social construction of religious practice and the devastating impact for women both in their access to their own interpretations of Islam and the larger issue of social oppression. Another set of articles describes literacy programs in Nepal developed with two North American NGOs. And a third discusses the effect of video technology as a tool for post-literacy. An income-generation and training program for Yemeni women highlights the importance of working with and strengthening local institutions to promote development. And three field-based experiences from India demonstrate how education for rural women must be linked to their immediate environment. Adult education practice in specific areas in industrialized countries is explored in articles from Canada, Australia and United States. New ground is broken with an article from South Africa ("power" and "resistance" as concepts in a gender training program). (DIPF/Text uebernommen). |
