| Abstract | This essay explores the notion of the educational policy centre as a "design studio". A critical pragmatic philosophy is introduced as both a means for understanding the controversies over what educational policy and policy centres ought to be, as well as providing better norms for doing educational policy. Drawing on postmodern cultural theory and post-liberal political theory, a vision of a new age educational policy centre is set forth and the benefits charted. It is concluded that only by abandoning the economic model of policy centre operations and embracing the postmodern, post-liberal view will policy professionals and policy subjects come to co-operate within a public space for the purposes of reconstructing the issues facing schools now and in the future.
