Abstract"The concept of an academic task has been central to much of the research into teaching. ... Tasks can be seen as mechanisms by which teachers begin to develop cognitive acti ity in their pupils according to subject area. The completion of the tasks provides the teacher with evidence a out both the extent of the learning and the efficacy of the task itself. Tasks are therefore selected because of their abilitiy to promote learning in a manner which the teacher intends." Data collection: 37 lessons of 5 teachers were observed and additionally all worksheets, information sheets, textbooks and other resources related to the tasks were collected. Results are presented to answer the two broad research questions which guides the investigation: 1) What is the nature of tasls set by history teachers? 2) How are these tasks related to the classroom process?
