Abstract | In the following articles five countries will be sonsidered. Two of them, the United States and the Netherlands developed a broad concept of citizenship and have put it into practice in the field of education via highschools and colleges or non-elitist concepts of schooling. What does modern citizenship mean according to scholars in these countries? What is the impact of recent developments and discussions? Does equality have the same meaning as it did 200 or 300 years ago? On the other hand: What is the situation in countries which developed their educational concepts primarily for the elites? Are the 'gentleman' and the 'Bildungsbuerger' prototypes of an imperfect kind of citizenship? What are the consequences of these concepts for the recent processes of intrenationalization ('globalisation') and regionalization? (DIPF/Text uebernommen) |
