| Abstract | "Adult education has been until recently the neglected sector of education" and education meant the formal system of schooling and colleges. Relatively few people seem to have noticed "that there is a world crisis in adult and non-formal education (and) that we may not apply to adult education many of the same criteria as are applied to the formal system of education". The article discusses in some detail the "various criticisms which have been made against the formal education system" and analyses if these criticisms can be applied to adult literacy in Third World countries. The criticisms are: 1) formal education costs too much, 2) it overproduces diploma- and degree-holders, 3) it teaches an irrelevant curriculum, 4) it promotes injustice, 5) its work is of a low quality.
