| Abstract | The dismantling of apartheid in South Africa has intensified the call for a non-discriminatory education system, acceptable to all South Africans, which will meet local and national needs in a future post- apartheid society. The paper gives an analysis of current educational developments in South Africa; it discusses a selection of crucial educational problems and outlines key recommendations of the Educational Renewal Strategy (ERS) of June 4, 1991. As background a historical overview of education ... is given and the present structure of the education system is explained. The "crucial problems" are: inequalities in educational provision, a wasteful duplication of facilities for different population groups, manpower needs, the breakdown of learning culture, decrease in numerical growth of white pupils and increase of black pupil population.
