Abstract | Forschungsmethode: deskriptiv; prognostisch. "This study gives an account of the changing relationship of higher education and the labour market in the Federal Republic of Germany. Some characteristics of the country, such as a strong governmental influence on higher education, emphasis of specific qualifications as well as homogeneity of institutions within a binary structure of higher education, have led to a unique mixture of planning and market approach in higher education planning. The author describes structures and quantitative developments of the education and the occupation systems, the post-war history of higher education and employment, and the transfer from university to the employment system. Special emphasis has been given to the explanation of requirement forecasts and research on higher education and employment; in both respects, a variety of interesting approaches can be found in this country which have often been overlooked in the international debate, owing to language barriers. Finally, the authors discuss in detail processes of adjustment to the higher supply of graduates in the seventies; in future, in their view, research and plannung should, instead of just being concerned about a 'mismatch', take into account the possible constructive effects of a discrepancy between demand and supply - for example, pressures to change the job roles and the division of labour."
