AbstractThe author picked up a lovely greetings card the other day. The front carried a picture of an overloaded ark. The caption read "And Noah saith "Stuff the dodos"--and behold, it was so". This is an attractive but rather simplistic explanation of extinction. The author is writing in the wake of some extraordinary events, as Professor Michael Reiss, Director of Education at the Royal Society, has been forced to resign following his suggestion that creationism should be discussed alongside evolution in science lessons. Reaction to this has been strong; Michael Reiss is an ASE stalwart and has had a long and distinguished career in science education, and his views reflect his classroom and school laboratory experience. Research by Pam Hanley of Southampton University (TESb, 2008) suggests that half of science teachers do not believe that God was involved in the creation process. However, it is hard to believe that they would be so insensitive as to dismiss or ridicule the views of their students. It has been said that evolution is a fact, but that natural selection is a theory. In other words, the mechanism exists, but the driving force is not yet fully understood. But it is the best model people have and, if evolution is true of the world in the past, it must also be true of the present, and the future. (ERIC).
