AbstractThis article describes the international program at Missouri Southern, which began 10 years ago and has expanded in both the number of students and faculty participating, and in the places to go for foreign study. The program affects students two ways, according to university president Julio Leon. While some students do foreign study as part of their professional preparation--for example, as majors in international business or foreign languages--"for the average student who has never been out of the state, let alone out of the country, it's just a revelation. They get a different perspective of themselves, of other countries, of their own country. They undergo tremendous personal growth. It opens their minds." For those who cannot or choose not to travel, as well as for those who do, Missouri Southern initiated "themed semesters" in 1997. Professors work material about whatever country is selected into many of their courses; the university also presents guest speakers and cultural events. People tend to think of studying languages, history, and art overseas, but biology and business adminstration are also big draws at Missouri Southern. Foreign study is especially important to the concentration in international business, in which students take courses in international marketing, management, accounting or corporate finance, plus an international-studies course. They also must demonstrate competency in a foreign language. Student surveys have indicated that all students had a generally positive attitude about international education, but freshmen anticipated a higher degree of participation than seniors reported actually having.
