| Abstract | As part of its ongoing effort to develop Army embedded training (ET) systems in which a tactical computer system is used to train personnel about its own utilization, a project was conducted to develop and evaluate courseware on how to program lessons for computer assisted instruction (CAI). Since PLANIT (Programing Language for Interactive Teaching) is the student/author language for providing ET modules for Army tactical data systems, PLANIT was chosen as both the course and the vehicle of instruction. The courseware package written for and in PLANIT was found to be successful in teaching subject matter experts who are novices with respect to CAI to program CAI lessons on a diverse set of topics, and to execute and edit their lessons online. The majority (93%) of the participants strongly endorsed this method for learning how to develop instructional materials. This document describes courseware development, the PLANIT courseware package itself, and evaluation procedures and results. It is concluded that the Army now has an in-house capability to train personnel to prepare, execute, edit, and update PLANIT courseware. Appendices present the PLANIT course outline and objectives, adjunct course materials, evaluation data forms, a printout of the PLANIT introductory lesson, and information on frequency of frame worksheet errors by students.
