Abstract | For a large portion of its student body, the school makes no conscious effort to prepare for the transition from school to employment. Instead, the school concentrates on preparing students for more school. About 20 percent of high school students receive some form of vocational education, but under pressure from the Congress, schools are beginning to recognize that they should meet the needs of a higher proportion of their students. Vocational education is devoting more attention now than formerly to the needs of the student and is placing less emphasis on meeting the narrow needs of the labor market. Although vocational education is criticized for being too narrow and specialized, this is rarely true. However, the principal method of evaluation of vocational education (immediate job placement) places a premium on specialization. The major weakness of vocational education content lies in its exclusion of many important occupations. There are several types of obsolescence of vocational education, some of which are much more serious than others. The part-time cooperative method of instruction, broadened teacher education, in-school employment offices, and better instructional materials are means of minimizing obsolescence. (Author) |
