AbstractBeyond the school setting, there are probably things that parents want for their child's education. A personal philosophy of gifted education and mission statement can keep their beliefs, values, and needs clearly focused. Their personal mission statement may vary considerably from that of their child's school, if one exists. This may be especially true in schools where the emphasis is on students' ability to achieve highly on state and standardized tests to the exclusion of other worthwhile goals. Important endeavors are guided by a philosophy, constitution, or principles. A philosophy of gifted education is useful for guidance, decision-making, and evaluation of progress. The 2010 NAGC position paper, "Redefining Giftedness for a New Century: Shifting the Paradigm," provides guidance regarding the education of gifted students in the 21st century. The position paper emphasizes the learning needs of gifted children that are unique from those of their nongifted peers. This article outlines several implications for educators. Developing one's own philosophy of gifted education and mission statement is a rewarding and beneficial experience worth the time and effort to guide a child's growth and development both now and during the years to come.
