Abstract | Today's readers and writers need to be proficient with technology tools, to interact within a global community, to successfully work with multiple streams of simultaneous information, and to critically create and use multimedia texts (National Council of Teachers of English ([NCTE] 2008). To help students develop these new literacies of information and communication technology (ICT), the International Reading Association ([IRA] 2009) urges teachers to integrate these literacies into the curriculum. Classroom teachers can explore strategies that are practical and realistic, using the latest research on successful interaction with Internet text as a guide to best practices. In the classroom, applying research on Internet comprehension, media literacy, and classroom-based best practices--especially in comprehension--will strengthen students' new literacy skills. Applying some reading strategies that may be considered "oldies but goodies" also may support Internet comprehension at a high-functioning level. In this article, the author focuses on the reading techniques of skimming and scanning. (ERIC). |
