Abstract | Community colleges are facing difficult times. Resources are becoming increasingly scarce, enrollments are growing to unprecedented numbers, the student body is becoming increasingly diverse, the economic downturn continues to have an effect on curriculum and mission, increased demands for accountability are driving decisions, and faculty turnover is rapidly becoming a problem as baby boomers retire. The loss of the faculty who built community colleges into what they are today is both a serious threat to community colleges and an opportunity. Community colleges are caught in a double bind: retirements are creating vacancies at a time when resources are shrinking and enrollments and costs are increasing. Replacing retiring faculty becomes much more difficult than in the past, and many full-time positions may be left unfilled. However, colleges will have to hire full-time faculty. With each new faculty hired, community college leaders have the unique opportunity to shape the future of the college. However, this opportunity also places a tremendous responsibility in the hands of these leaders. Because hiring responsibly is a difficult task for most untrained and unprepared hiring committees, some refer to the process as a game. The author suggests, however, that it is much more serious than a gaming metaphor would suggest. Hiring right is a difficult task and requires one to put forth his/her best effort. (ERIC). |
