Abstract | Teaching that intentionally integrates cognitive learning with students' affective lives is the kind of pedagogy that can leave a long lasting, even transformative impression on students that outlives the details of course content. Because this author wants her students to truly engage with the subject of domestic violence, she finds it essential to integrate a number of carefully selected teaching elements, pushing students beyond cold facts and statistics, and even beyond the models and paradigms included in most text books. She mentions that there is always a subgroup of students who have had personal experience with domestic violence, yet for those without personal experience, domestic violence is intellectually hard to imagine. The author shares how she effectively engages students with the issue of domestic violence through four components: (1) controversial readings; (2) particularly powerful films; (3) expert guest speakers who work with victims and/or perpetrators of domestic violence; and (4) observations in domestic violence courts.
