Abstract | Granting awards to recognize outstanding service and leadership is among the more important functions of professional associations. The School Psychologist of the Year Award (SPYA) is one of several national-level recognitions. Although NASP's annual SPYA dates only to 1991, several state associations were already granting such distinctions. Their awards were often called school psychologist of the year or practitioner of the year, and sometimes were given in the name of a distinguished former member and practitioner. During the brief history of the NASP SPYA, it has been granted to 18 people across the 17 years in which an award was made. In fall of 2008, all 18 recipients of the NASP SPYA were contacted and agreed to participate in a survey that was conducted by e-mail. The recipients were asked what each considered to be the major accomplishment of his/her overall career. Some personal reflections from past recipients are presented. The authors show that the history of the award and its recipients provide a strong indication that the award is achieving its goal of recognizing outstanding practitioners. (ERIC). |
