Abstract | Some couples merely talk about making sweet music together. Yusef Chisholm and Lori Williams-Chisholm really mean it. This article presents an interview with Chisholm and Williams-Chisholm, both music educators in Washington, District of Columbia (DC), and active performing jazz artists, who infuse their classrooms with lessons from the stage. Chisholm teaches 165 students and directs five bands at Hardy Middle School. He recently won the 2008 Agnes Meyer Award for outstanding teaching in the capital's public schools. Williams-Chisholm, a singer who often performs with her bassist husband, brings a strong stage presence to her classroom at Wilson Senior High School. She teaches 80 students in four different choirs and close to 50 in general music classes; she also is an award winner, having been named Arts Teacher of the Year by the superintendent of DC's public schools in 2007. Both husband and wife take pride in playing an active, positive role in the lives of children, particularly during the turbulent adolescent years. (ERIC). |
