AbstractOpportunities for professional development can benefit the practice of teaching, the learning of students, and the culture of schooling. Thus, considerable attention has been given to effective professional development programs and many reform agendas have made such initiatives a priority (No Child Left Behind, 2002; National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, n.d.). Authentic partnerships between universities and schools provide opportunities for these constituencies to work together in a substantive manner in setting and meeting common educational goals. In the authors' work as teacher educators, they have been involved with numerous professional development initiatives, which ranged in duration from a single day to a full year of implementation. Their observations of teachers and review of the literature made them increasingly aware of the need for programs that provided longer terms of engagement in professional development. They also recognized the need to enter into an authentic partnership model with a school system, one in which the relationship would consist of regular, frequent, and ongoing opportunities for genuine collaboration and learning for all involved parties. Much to their delight, an opportunity to do just this presented itself in the form of the Master Teacher Program. In this article, the authors describe the theoretical and practical parameters of this partnership, offer a program description, and include a discussion of lessons learned along this particular path of professional development, in the context of a vibrant university-school partnership.
