Abstract | Dine, the very first tribal college in the United States, and the tribal college movement are both celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. The seeds of the movement were sown many decades before the debut of the Navajo Community College. Indeed, since native peoples began attending mainstream U.S. colleges and universities 350 years ago, they have sought to put their own spin on education, according to the report of The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. For years, efforts to gain federal funds and support for native-controlled education failed. During those years, the BIA was an active opponent of Indian-controlled education and often testified in Congress against such efforts. Several events during the 1960s and 1970s, however, provided a flashpoint that set the tribal college movement in motion. Today, securing funding continues to be a struggle, yet, it is no longer a day-to-day battle for survival. Throughout the challenges and growth, the movement remains committed to sustaining tribal culture, language and community. (ERIC). |
