Abstract | Business and professional writing courses offer ideal contexts for incorporating service learning into the academic classroom. The focus of such courses on rhetorical analysis and language as social action provide a sound theoretical and practical ground for the application of writing and speaking skills to solve problems and effect change. In this article, one of the authors, Mahin, describes a service-learning assignment she has incorporated in both her graduate and undergraduate course in business communication. For graduate students in the Professional Writing Program, the author uses the Stanford model, in which students do writing as their actual service-learning assignment. For students in the undergraduate business writing class, the author has adapted this model to accommodate the varied applicable skills of the students. Student responses to the service-learning experience are overwhelmingly positive. (ERIC). |
