Abstract | The third article in this series featuring the Living History Program (see December 2005 and January 2006) looks at the life of Phillis Wheatley, the first published African American woman poet. Though little is known of her life as a slave in Boston, her published poetry is available today for people to read and enjoy. This study of Phillis Wheatley can be used as a spark for integrated lesson plans encouraging student inquiry into the issue of slavery in the original American Colonies while studying and reading poetry. This can further lead to a study of the poetry of that era as well as a comparative study to African American poets today. In this article, the authors feature a living history script for a portrayal of Phillis Wheatley and an annotated bibliography of good teaching and learning materials. (Contains 3 resources.)
