| Abstract | As the benefits of an international education become more widely recognized, a growing number of young Americans are enrolling in institutions in the British Isles. According to Britain's Higher Education Statistics Agency, in the 2005-2006 academic year, 14,755 Americans were enrolled in degree programs at British institutions, compared with 8,596 ten years earlier. There are no statistics on the numbers of American students enrolled in universities outside the United States. But studying abroad for shorter periods of time is on the rise for students enrolled at American institutions: 205,983 Americans studied abroad in 2004-2005, the most recent year for which data are available, up from 84,403 10 years before. This article explores why studying abroad has become a popular choice among American students. (ERIC). |
