Abstract | With the rise of mental health issues occurring on college campuses, college counseling centers are increasing their efforts to meet the needs of students by ensuring that students are able to matriculate in their educational journey. Over the past few years, national data indicated that annually about 38% of college students "felt so depressed it was difficult to function," 10.4% said they "seriously thought of ending their lives," and 1.9% actually made a suicide attempt (ACHA annual survey, 2016). These percentages become palpable when translated to actual numbers on any given campus with these concerns. In order to meet the mental health needs of students, the University of South Alabama's Counseling and Testing Center developed and implemented a broad-based, student-centered training program intended to improve the network of peer support on campus. This program was designed to identify and train a wide range of connected and concerned students in how to recognize and best support students who are in distress. Once trained, these students became part of the University of South Alabama's Jag Student Support Network (JSSN), a group of students dedicated to and supported in reaching out and helping others in distress.
