Abstract | In an era of increasing division and conflict, education innovations that focus on building compassion and understanding hold a promise for true transformative power. Using a new tool called Empatico, these educators paired up with a partner classroom somewhere else in the world to begin their journey as "Kindness Champions" who made joint commitments to bringing more empathy and kindness to their communities, and to the world. Empatico, the signature initiative of The KIND Foundation, is a free digital learning platform that fosters empathy in children. Empatico's mission is to connect classrooms around the world to enable children to experience meaningful connections, discover how their peers live, and recognize their shared humanity. Empatico's lessons are specifically designed to emphasize SEL skills and relationship building by engaging students in exploring and practicing three facets of empathy: (1) Emotional or affective empathy, or feeling what another person is feeling; (2) Cognitive empathy or "perspective-taking," or putting yourself "in another person's shoes;" and (3) Behavioral empathy or compassion, or taking action to help others based on your understanding of another person's feelings or perspective. Educators have access to a library of resources they can use in any combination to meet students' unique social-emotional needs and support their healthy empathy development. (As Provided). |
