Abstract | Classroom discourse is critical to helping students learn mathematics. Interacting with peers and the teacher within a classroom community assists students in building their understanding of mathematical concepts. A discourse community, sometimes referred to as a math-talk learning community, is "a classroom community in which the teacher and students use discourse to support the mathematical learning of all participants." A discourse community does not happen overnight. It takes time, patience, practice, and a lot of encouragement. Creating a discourse community within a classroom enables students to share their ideas, construct arguments, and critique the reasoning of others. The purpose of this article is to describe the process to develop community norms and help students use language to communicate and present their mathematical ideas. Applying these routines during every math class helps create a discourse community where we talk about math. (ERIC). |
