Abstract | Self-regulation lays the foundation for positive social relationships and academic success. In this article, we provide an overview of self-regulation and the key terms related to selfregulation, such as executive function. We discuss research on how self-regulation develops and connections between self-regulation and social and academic outcomes. We provide specific suggestions for ways that parents and caregivers can promote the development of strong self-regulation, including positive parenting practices and approaches that promote critical thinking in children. We also provide activities that help children practice these skills at home and in early care settings. (As Provided). |
