Abstract | One author shares the unique opportunity to be immersed in the science of "sound at work" through participation in NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Teacher at Sea Program. A third- through fifth-grade learning outcome within the Nature of Science section of the "Next Generation Science Standards" ("NGSS") states "Science investigations use a variety of methods, tools, and techniques" (NGSS Lead States 2013, p. 98). It is the interpretation of those observations and the application of the data collected that makes the science interesting. One of the authors shares their experience aboard the "Rainier," where the author learned how scientists use sound. The teacher brought back what was learned and applied it in the classroom. The techniques are described in this article through the form of a learning center in the classroom. (ERIC). |
