AbstractThrough participation in co-curricular leadership roles, such as resident assistants, orientation leaders, and student government, students engage in integrative learning, an active process by which students connect, apply, and synthesize their learning (Barber, 2020b). One example of how students integrate their learning is through participation in high-impact practices (HIPs), a formal set of evidence-based strategies (Kuh, 2017; Kuh, 2018; Wawrzynski & Baldwin, 2014). This correlational research study examined if holding leadership roles in co-curricular experiences impacted the ability of undergraduate college students at a Jesuit Catholic institution on the East Coast of the USA to demonstrate integrative learning. Further, it explored how well a student can articulate experiences in which they have integrated their learning. This study sought to understand if there is a relationship between a student's major degree of study and their ability to demonstrate integrative learning in their co-curricular leadership role. Finally, it further sought to understand the extent to which the structures of co-curricular leadership roles exemplify characteristics of HIPs. Findings indicate statistically significant results connected to student demonstration of integrative learning. Students' qualitative responses indicate the ability to articulate how they integrate their learning between academic experiences and through their co-curricular leadership roles. Additionally, results reflect key components of the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies valued by employers. Students indicate having experienced the eight characteristics of HIPs in their co-curricular leadership role, demonstrating that these experiences should receive official recognition as a high-impact practice in the future.
