AbstractThe purpose of this interpretive, phenomenological study was to explore and understand how millennial nursing students perceived their lived experiences of being active learners in an associate degree program and how it affected student learning outcomes and/or program satisfaction. The research questions guiding this study were based on constructivist theory, which views the learning experience as a personal interaction between learner and environment. Two research questions guided the study by asking: (1) what are the lived experiences and perceived effects of active learning on student learning outcomes, from the perspective of millennial nursing students in an associate degree nursing program, centrally located in the state of Florida, who have experienced the phenomenon? (2) what are the lived experiences and perceived effects of active learning on millennial learner satisfaction with the program from the perspective of nursing students in an associate degree nursing program, centrally located in the state of Florida, who have experienced the phenomenon? The investigator interviewed 15 participants enrolled in the associate degree nursing program. The data were analyzed, coded, and categorized to develop themes which were: the work of active learning; transfer of theory to practice; learner confidence; classroom relationships; and, passion for teaching/learning. The investigator determined that active learning is a social encounter which can be positively or negatively impacted by the educator facilitating the learning experience. This information has added to the body of knowledge on active learning and the millennial nursing student.
