AbstractThe purpose of this research is to describe the degree to which Millennial students who attend two-year colleges exhibit the characteristics of the seven Millennial generation characteristics. Howe and Strauss (2007) purport that the Millennials exhibit seven key characteristics in their behavior: Special, Sheltered, Confident, Team-oriented, Achieving, Pressured and Conventional. Additionally, this study examines the differences in the perceptions of the behavior of the Millennial students compared to the perceptions of their behavior as perceived by the administrators and instructors who serve them on a two-year campus. The data was gathered through a survey instrument developed for the purpose of this study. The survey was completed by 179 Millennial students who attend a technical college in Wisconsin. There was also a parallel survey completed by 47 administrators who work with the students, and 71 full-time instructors who teach at the college. It was determined that the seven characteristics of Millennials as previously described did not accurately reflect those of the Millennials at a two-year college. Based on the data collected from the survey, there was a variance in the grand means of the responses. There was clearly no consistency in these means, and these means show that the Millennial students did not resoundingly agree with any of these characteristics as constructed in the survey. This was the strongest indicator that further analysis of the data needed to be done in order to determine if there were other characteristics that better described the population. Therefore a model was created to more appropriately describe the characteristics of millennial students who attend two-year colleges. The five characteristics that describe the Millennials include: attached to parents, have elevated expectations of how others behave, focused on relationships with others, engaged and preparing for the future, and social awareness. This newly introduced model includes practical steps for application on a two-year college campus and it is hoped that the use of this model will lead to a greater understanding of these students and the ways in which two-year colleges can meet their needs.
