Abstract | This book provides a rationale, model, and procedures for implementing change in high schools. Focus is on adoption of applied, context-based, community-based education that eliminates competition between academic and vocational education and promotes cooperation in creating career-based education. Chapter 1 provides a review of how this type of education has evolved and a rationale for why it has become a central focus of educational reform. Chapter 2 presents an overview of current school reform formats that embrace these reform elements, e.g. career majors, Tech Prep, schools-within-schools, magnet schools, and academies. Chapter 3 details how to establish career majors as organizers for a school's curriculum and to identify the courses to be part of career major programs, Tech Prep programs, academies, and magnet schools. Chapter 4 focuses on detailing and developing each course within the major. Chapter 5 discusses integrating and articulating the curriculum. Chapter 6 presents a general overview of community-based activities and major forms of community-based experience programs, along with each of their school and community-based components and characteristics, and discusses the partnerships essential to successful programs. Chapter 7 addresses evaluating program effectiveness. Many examples, planning worksheets, checklists, and assessment guides make the book practical and easy-to-use. (YLB) |
