AbstractFamily Message journals, notebooks in which first-graders write a message to their families and receive a family reply each day, provide a fertile context for instruction and practice in writing for real-world functions and authentic audiences. Observation of classroom instruction, qualitative analysis of case-study children's and families' messages, and interviews with children and family members revealed how children developed a functional perspective on writing and audience awareness. Evidence of audience awareness included growth in children's recognition and use of rhetorical and conventional strategies and constraints, as demonstrated in their writing processes and products. Both teachers and family members played important instructional roles. Results suggest that real functions and audiences are central to student ownership of writing and that explicit instruction and clearly delineated assignments may enhance young students' power as writers, rather than limiting their sense of control and engagement.
