Abstract | This report was written by the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities and offers suggestions to the President of the United States on ways to strengthen the system of support for the arts and the humanities in the United States. The document describes a vital cultural life as essential to a functioning democracy. It also examines the many aspects of the country's complex, interdependent support system which includes individual, foundation, and corporate support; government grants; and the many creative ways in which cultural organizations earn income. Included are over 50 recommendations in 5 categories or steps to the future: Educating our Youth for the Future; Investing in Cultural Capital; Renewing American Philanthropy; Affirming the Public Role; and Expanding International Cultural Relations. The report concludes with a selected bibliography. (KCM) |
