AbstractThe Community Change for Youth Development (CCYD) demonstration is an attempt by Public/Private Ventures to create youth programming that can improve young people's present lives and future prospects in a wide range of communities. The core concepts of CCYD are: (1) increasing the number of caring and competent adults in youthUs lives; (2) increasing the number of positive and engaging experiences available in nonschool hours; (3) ensuring a strong connection between work and learning; (4) providing special support through critical transitions; and (5) involving youth themselves in designing and carrying out these activities. This report documents the early experiences of a group of communities that began to undertake the implementation of CCYD in late 1995. It focuses on early program planning sites in eight cities and early implementation in six cities. The first chapter introduces CCYD and its underlying concepts. Chapter 2 outlines how sites were chosen. Chapter 3 details the planning experiences for key participants--adult and youth residents in the implementation cities. In Chapter 4, how the planning experience shaped early implementation is explored, and the final chapter reflects on the early lessons from the initial phases of CCYD. Appendixes describe the core concepts of CCYD and provide summaries of strategic plans. (Contains two tables and one figure.) (SLD)
