Abstract | This handbook is designed to help teachers teach thinking skills to elementary and secondary school students, and is based on a six-part model of teaching and learning adapted from J. Chaffee's "Thinking Critically" (1990). It highlights the key elements of teaching (to motivate students to think, to integrate the curriculum, and to help students associate in groups) along with the key elements of learning (to activate the process, to demonstrate thinking and learning skills, and to communicate new knowledge to others). The handbook includes seven sample interdisciplinary units that emphasize thinking skills that are appropriate for different grade levels. The units focus on the nature of change, domestic animals, art history, ocean voyages, disabilities, leadership, and writing about science. (Contains 80 references.) (MDM) |
